Numerical Analysis of Piezoelectric Active Repair in the Presence of Frictional Contact Conditions

2013

The increasing development of smart materials, such as piezoelectric and shape memory alloys, has opened new opportunities for improving repair techniques. Particularly, active repairs, based on the converse piezoelectric effect, can increase the life of a structure by reducing the crack opening. A deep characterization of the electromechanical behavior of delaminated composite structures, actively repaired by piezoelectric patches, can be achieved by considering the adhesive layer between the host structure and the repair and by taking into account the frictional contact between the crack surfaces. In this paper, Boundary Element (BE) analyses performed on delaminated composite structures …

A Cohesive-Frictional Interface Model with Frictional Properties Degradation

2009

The paper is devoted to an interface constitutive modeling which couples a cohesive behavior, based on the damage mechanics theory, with a frictional one, defined in a non-associative plasticity framework. By means of a specific interpretation of the damage variable, the formulation follows the transition of the initial sound interface material layer, up to the fully cracked condition. The macrocrack surfaces have initial frictional properties and is subjected to degradation phenomena. Namely, the smoothing and breaking of surface asperities cause a progressive reduction of dilatancy effects and also of the frictional angle. These phenomena are modeled as uncoupled: dilatancy saturation is …

Advances in Design, Simulation and Manufacturing IV

2021

This book reports on topics at the interface between mechanical and chemical engineering, emphasizing design, simulation, and manufacturing. Specifically, it covers recent developments in the mechanics of solids and structures, numerical simulation of coupled problems, including fatigue, fluid behavior, particle movement, pressure distribution. Further, it reports on developments in chemical process technology, heat and mass transfer, energy-efficient technologies, and industrial ecology. Based on the 4th International Conference on Design, Simulation, Manufacturing: The Innovation Exchange (DSMIE-2021), held on June 8-11, 2021, in Lviv, Ukraine, this second volume of a 2-volume set provide…
